Why Venice Is Sinking: The Slow Disappearance of a Floating City

The city is slowly sinking, while the sea around it is slowly rising. Together, these two processes are making floods more common and putting the city's future at risk.

Many people think Venice is suddenly sinking, but this is not true. The city has been subsiding for hundreds of years. Subsidence means that the land is gradually moving downwards. Venice was built on soft mud and clay in a shallow lagoon. Although millions of wooden piles support the buildings, the ground underneath slowly becomes compressed by their weight.

The wooden foundations have lasted for centuries because they stay underwater. Without oxygen, the wood does not rot. The real problem is the soft ground below them, which continues to sink little by little.

People also made the situation worse during the twentieth century. Factories near Venice pumped large amounts of water from underground aquifers. When the water was removed, the ground became even more compact, causing the city to sink faster. This practice was later stopped, but by then Venice had already sunk several extra centimetres.

At the same time, climate change is causing sea levels to rise. As glaciers melt and warmer seawater expands, the Adriatic Sea becomes higher. This means Venice has to deal with sinking land and rising water at the same time.

One of the best-known results is acqua alta, or "high water." During these tides, streets, homes and famous places such as Piazza San Marco are flooded. Raised walkways are often put in place so that people can continue walking through the city.

To protect Venice, Italy built the MOSE flood barrier system. Huge gates rise from the seabed when very high tides are expected, stopping seawater from entering the lagoon. The system has already protected the city from several dangerous floods.

Scientists are still looking for other ways to help Venice. Some ideas include lifting parts of the city or using new engineering methods. However, these plans are still speculative, and nobody knows whether they will work.

Another problem is that saltwater slowly erodes the city's buildings. As the water dries, salt stays inside the bricks and stone, causing damage over many years. This makes protecting Venice's historic buildings even more difficult.

Even with these challenges, Venice has remained incredibly resilient. For more than 1,500 years, its people have repaired, rebuilt and protected their city. Engineers and scientists continue working to preserve one of the world's greatest cultural treasures.

No one knows exactly what Venice will look like in another hundred years. However, one thing is certain: saving this extraordinary city will require science, engineering and careful planning for many years to come.
