The $35 Logo That Changed Sport Forever: The Story of Nike

Today, Nike is one of the most famous sports brands in the world. Millions of people wear Nike shoes, clothes and sports equipment every day.

Nike is one of the world's most successful sports brands, but it began as a small company with a big dream. Today, millions of people wear Nike shoes and clothing, but the business started with two men who wanted to improve running shoes for athletes.

In 1964, Phil Knight and his former running coach, Bill Bowerman, created a company called Blue Ribbon Sports. At first, they did not make their own shoes. Instead, they imported running shoes from Japan and sold them from the back of Knight's car at sports competitions. The fledgling business had very little money, so every sale helped it grow.

Bill Bowerman was always looking for ways to make better running shoes. He wanted them to be lighter, faster and more comfortable. One day, he had an unusual idea while looking at his wife's waffle iron. He poured rubber into it to make a new type of shoe sole with better traction. The experiment worked, and the design became one of Nike's most famous inventions.

In 1971, the company changed its name to Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory. Around the same time, a student called Carolyn Davidson designed the famous Swoosh logo. She was paid only thirty-five dollars for her work, but the logo later became synonymous with sport and success around the world.

Nike became much bigger in the 1980s. The company understood that people were buying more than trainers. They were also buying confidence, ambition and a lifestyle. Everything changed in 1984 when Nike signed a young basketball player named Michael Jordan. His Air Jordan shoes became a huge success and changed sports marketing forever.

Another reason for Nike's success is its ability to reinvent itself. The company has continued to develop new technology, improve its products and create fashionable sportswear. This has helped Nike stay popular for many years, even with strong competition from other brands.

Nike has also faced problems. During the 1990s, the company came under public scrutiny after reports about poor working conditions in some factories. As a result, Nike introduced new rules and worked to improve conditions in its supply chain.

Today, Nike is much more than a sports company. Its famous Swoosh logo and the slogan "Just Do It" are recognised across the world. From a small business selling shoes from a car, Nike has become one of the most influential brands in history.
