The story focuses on Michael Corleone, the youngest son of family leader Vito Corleone. At the beginning, Michael wants to remain separate from his family’s criminal activities. He has served in the army and tells his girlfriend Kay that he is different from his relatives.
As the film continues, Michael becomes more involved. At first, he acts to protect his father and family. Later, protection turns into revenge and ambition. By the end, he is colder and more ruthless than the people he once judged. His gradual change gives the story strong psychological verisimilitude because the audience can understand each decision, even when it is wrong.
