Why Do Animals Migrate?

Every year, billions of animals leave their usual habitats and travel elsewhere. Birds cross continents, whales move through oceans, and large herds follow seasonal rain across grasslands. Salmon return from the sea to the rivers where they were born, while some butterflies travel thousands of kilometres across several generations.

Migration is not simply any kind of movement. Animals may search for food, escape predators or explore new territory without truly migrating. Migration is usually regular, directional and linked to a particular season or stage of life. Many animals repeat the same journey each year.

The main reason animals migrate is that conditions change. Food, water and safe breeding areas are not always available in the same place. A habitat that is ideal in summer may become cold, dry or empty in winter.

For many species, finding food is the main imperative. Wildebeest follow rainfall because it produces fresh grass. Whales and seabirds travel towards areas where fish and plankton are abundant. Many birds fly north in spring because insects, seeds and plants become easier to find.

Some animals leave not because they cannot tolerate cold weather, but because their food disappears. Lakes may freeze, insects may become inactive and plants may stop producing seeds. Even an animal that survives low temperatures may struggle without enough to eat.

Breeding is another important reason for migration. The best place to feed may not be the safest place to raise young. Humpback whales feed in cold waters where food is plentiful, then travel to warmer areas to breed. These waters contain less food but offer safer conditions for young calves.

Migration has many benefits, but it can be extremely perilous. Animals may face storms, predators, hunger and exhaustion. Birds can be blown off course, fish may struggle to pass dams, and land animals may be blocked by roads or fences. However, staying in one place may be even more dangerous if food or water disappears.

Timing is essential. Animals must synchronise their journeys with changes in the environment. They need to arrive when food is available and breeding conditions are suitable. Arriving too early or too late can reduce their chances of survival.

Animals use different signals to decide when to leave. Day length is reliable because it changes predictably each year. Temperature, rainfall, wind and food supply also affect timing. Before migration, many animals become restless and eat more.

Some migratory behaviour is inherited. Young birds may fly in the correct direction even if they have never travelled before. Other animals learn routes from parents or older members of the group. Young geese and cranes often follow experienced birds.

Animals also need strong navigational abilities. Birds may use the sun, stars, rivers, coastlines or mountains to find their way. Some animals can detect Earth’s magnetic field and use it like a natural compass.

Salmon use smell to recognise their birth rivers. Sea turtles may use magnetic information to return to particular beaches, while whales follow coastlines and underwater features. Scientists still do not fully understand every method animals use.

Before travelling, many migrants prepare their bodies. Birds eat large amounts of food and store fat for long flights. Some can fly for several days without landing. Animals may also change their sleeping patterns or metabolism.

Resting places are equally important. Many animals travel in stages and stop at wetlands, forests or coastal areas to eat and recover. If an important stopover site is destroyed, they may not have enough energy to continue. Protecting only the beginning and end of a route is therefore not enough.

Some migrations take place across generations. Monarch butterflies travelling north through North America reproduce during the journey. Their offspring continue the route, while a later generation travels south. No single butterfly completes the entire annual migration.

Not every member of a species migrates. Sometimes part of a population travels while the rest remains in the same area. This may depend on age, health, food or weather. Different strategies can improve a population’s resilience, because not every animal faces the same risks.

Human activity makes migration more difficult. Roads, cities, farms, fences and dams can block traditional routes. Artificial lights confuse birds and sea turtles, while glass buildings create collision risks.

Climate change also affects migration. Rising temperatures can cause food to appear earlier. A bird may arrive at its breeding ground after the main insect season has passed, leaving less food for its chicks. Drought can remove watering places, warmer seas can move fish, and extreme weather can make journeys more dangerous.

Protecting migratory animals requires international cooperation. A bird may breed in one country, rest in another and spend winter in a third. Scientists use satellite tracking, radar and electronic tags to discover where animals travel and where they face danger.

Animals migrate because survival often depends on reaching the right place at the right time. Migration helps them find food and water, avoid difficult conditions and reproduce successfully. These journeys depend on instinct, experience, preparation and remarkable navigational skills.

Migration shows both the resilience and vulnerability of wildlife. Animals can cross oceans, mountains and deserts, but they may still be stopped by a missing wetland, a fence or a changing climate. Their journeys remind us that habitats around the world are closely connected.
