Ferdinand Magellan led one of the most important voyages in history. Although he did not complete the journey himself, the expedition he organised became the first to sail all the way around the world. It changed the way people understood geography and opened new trade routes across the oceans.
Magellan was born in Portugal around 1480, but he later sailed for Spain. In 1519, he left with five ships and about 270 sailors. His goal was to reach the Spice Islands by sailing west instead of taking the usual route around Africa.
After crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the expedition found a narrow passage at the southern end of South America. This waterway is now called the Strait of Magellan. Discovering it was a major breakthrough because it gave sailors a new route into the Pacific Ocean.
The journey across the Pacific was much harder than expected. The crew ran out of food, many became ill, and some died during the long voyage. In 1521, Magellan was killed in a confrontation with local warriors on the island of Mactan in the Philippines.
Even after losing their leader, the expedition continued. Under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, one ship finally returned to Spain in 1522. Only eighteen men survived the journey.
The expedition gave compelling evidence that ships could sail around the entire Earth. It also helped people understand the true size of the Pacific Ocean and improved maps for future explorers.
Today, Magellan's voyage is still controversial. Many people admire his courage, but others point out that European exploration often led to conflict and the colonisation of other countries.
The success of the expedition also showed great perseverance. The sailors continued their journey despite hunger, disease, storms, and the loss of their captain, completing one of history's greatest adventures.
