For over ten years, Howells has been trying to recover a hard drive that he believes contains the private keys to about 8,000 Bitcoin. The drive is buried somewhere in a landfill site in Newport, and many people now call it one of the most valuable pieces of rubbish in history.

Bitcoin was created in 2009 by a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Unlike normal currencies, Bitcoin is decentralised. This means that no government or central bank controls it. Instead, it works on a network of computers around the world. Every transaction is recorded on a public system called the blockchain.
In the early days, Bitcoin was worth almost nothing. People could mine new coins using an ordinary computer at home. Mining means helping to check Bitcoin transactions and receiving new Bitcoin as a reward.

The landfill contains about 1.4 million tonnes of waste. Even though Howells believes he knows the area where the hard drive was buried, it would still mean searching through huge amounts of compacted rubbish.
He has created several plans to recover it. These plans include engineers, robots, drones and artificial intelligence to help search safely. He has also promised to give some of the money to local community projects if the Bitcoin is recovered.
However, Newport City Council has always refused permission.
The council says digging up the landfill could damage the environment, interrupt normal waste management and still might not find the hard drive. Even if it were found, years underground may have caused serious corrosion, making it impossible to recover the data.
Howells believes experts could still repair the drive and recover the information. Because of this, he continued fighting for permission.
In early 2025, a judge ruled against him, ending his legal case. For now, the hard drive remains buried.

There is no company or bank that can give you a new private key if you lose it. If your key disappears, your Bitcoin cannot be accessed again.
