After many years of testing, Formula One introduced the Halo. It is a strong titanium bar that sits above the driver's head. Although it weighs only a few kilograms, it is strong enough to protect the driver during very serious accidents.
The reaction was very polarised. Some drivers liked the extra protection, but many others disliked the way it looked. Lewis Hamilton even called it the "worst-looking modification" ever added to a Formula One car. Many fans also felt it changed the appearance of the sport.

The strongest proof came in 2020 at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Romain Grosjean crashed into a barrier at high speed, and his car caught fire. During the crash, the Halo deflected the barrier away from his head. Grosjean escaped with burns, but he survived an accident that could easily have been fatal.
In 2021, the Halo helped again when Max Verstappen's car landed on top of Hamilton's car during the Italian Grand Prix. Once again, the Halo protected the driver's head.
After these accidents, there was a clear reassessment of the Halo. Many drivers who had criticised it admitted that they had changed their minds. Most now believe it is one of the best safety devices ever introduced into Formula One.
Today, the Halo is also used in many other racing series. It has become an important part of modern motorsport safety.
The Halo's trajectory shows that new safety ideas are often unpopular at first. People sometimes resist change, especially in sports with a long history. But when a new invention saves lives, opinions usually change. The Halo is now accepted as an essential part of every Formula One car, proving that safety is always more important than appearance.
