Many companies become successful, but only a few stay successful for a long time. New technology, different customer needs and strong competition can make it…
Many successful businesses disappear after a few years because they fail to change. New technology appears, customers want different products and competitors enter the market with fresh ideas. Companies that refuse to adapt often lose their place. Nintendo is one of the few businesses that has survived for more than 130 years by constantly changing and finding new opportunities.
Today, Nintendo is famous for characters such as Mario, Link and Pikachu. However, the company did not begin with video games. It was founded in Kyoto, Japan, in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi and made handmade playing cards.
Over the years, Nintendo tried many different businesses, including toys, taxis and even food products. Most of these ideas did not succeed, but the company never stopped looking for new ways to grow.
Everything changed in the 1980s when Nintendo entered the video game industry. The Nintendo Entertainment System became a huge success and helped make home gaming popular around the world. Games like Super Mario Bros. became classics and introduced millions of people to Nintendo.
In the 1990s, competition became much stronger. Sony released the PlayStation, which offered better graphics and more powerful technology. Many people expected Nintendo to compete by building a faster console.
Instead, Nintendo made a different choice.
In 2006, the company launched the Nintendo Wii. Instead of using a normal controller, players could move their arms to play sports, dance or exercise. At first, some experts thought this was only a gimmick and that people would soon lose interest.
They were wrong.
The Wii sold more than 100 million consoles. Families played together, grandparents enjoyed simple games and many people who had never played video games before became Nintendo customers. The company had created a completely new market instead of fighting directly against its competitors.
Not every product was successful. The Wii U, released in 2012, sold poorly because many customers did not understand how it was different from the Wii. Some people even believed Nintendo should stop making consoles.
But Nintendo refused to give up.
In 2017, it launched the Nintendo Switch, which could be used both at home and as a portable console. This simple idea became a huge success.
Popular games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe helped make the Switch one of the best-selling consoles ever. During the COVID-19 pandemic, demand became so high that many shops could not keep it in stock.
Today, Nintendo is a diversified entertainment company. It earns money from games, films, mobile apps, toys and attractions like Super Nintendo World. The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie also showed that its characters are popular far beyond video games.
One of Nintendo's biggest strengths is its resilience. The company has experienced both success and failure, but it has always found a way to recover. Instead of copying its competitors, Nintendo usually creates something different that attracts new customers.
Its history also shows the danger of complacency. Many companies become too comfortable after becoming successful and stop improving. Nintendo has avoided this by continuing to try new ideas, even when there is no guarantee they will work.
Nintendo's story proves that businesses do not stay successful by doing the same thing forever. They succeed because they are willing to change, take risks and reinvent themselves when the world changes around them.
