It may sound like something from a science-fiction film, but this is real engineering. The Bernabéu has one of the most advanced football pitch systems in the world. Instead of covering the grass and hoping it survives, the stadium stores it safely below ground until it is needed again.
For many years, football stadiums had a difficult problem. They wanted to host concerts because they bring in a lot of money, but heavy stages, trucks and thousands of people standing on the pitch could seriously damage the grass.
Repairing or replacing the field after every concert was expensive and took time. The quality of the pitch could also suffer, making it less suitable for professional football.
When Real Madrid rebuilt the Bernabéu, they decided to find a better solution.
Their answer was an ingenious underground storage system.
The football pitch is divided into several large sections. Each section rests on a hydraulic platform, which works like a giant lift. When the stadium needs to prepare for a concert, the platforms slowly lower the sections into a huge subterranean chamber beneath the stadium.
The process is slow and carefully controlled. Each section is placed in its own position underground, where it remains safe while the stadium is used for other events.
Of course, grass cannot survive in complete darkness.
That is why the underground area is designed almost like a greenhouse. Powerful LED grow lights provide the light that the grass normally receives from the sun. These lights help the grass continue growing even though it is below the surface.
Fresh air is another important part of the system. Ventilation equipment keeps air moving through the storage area and helps prevent mould from forming. Temperature is also controlled so the grass stays healthy throughout the year.
Automatic watering systems provide exactly the right amount of water, while drainage removes any extra moisture. All these systems work together for the preservation of the natural pitch.
When a concert is planned, workers lower the grass before building the stage. Heavy trucks, cranes and equipment can then enter the stadium without causing damage to the field.
After the concert, the stage is removed and the pitch sections are lifted back into place.
Groundskeepers inspect every part of the surface before the next football match. They check that the grass is healthy and that the joins between the sections are smooth. Most spectators never notice that the pitch has recently been underground.
The system also makes good business sense.
Instead of being used only for football matches, the Bernabéu can now host concerts, exhibitions, business events and other entertainment throughout the year. This allows the stadium to earn much more money while still keeping a world-class natural playing surface.
The technology behind the moving pitch is extremely advanced. The hydraulic lifts must move thousands of tonnes very carefully. The hidden infrastructure includes lighting, ventilation, irrigation, drainage, climate control and powerful machinery that all work together.
The pitch is also retractable, meaning it can be moved away when necessary and returned to exactly the same position afterwards. This gives the stadium much greater flexibility than traditional football grounds.
Many architects and sports clubs around the world are now studying the Bernabéu. As stadiums become more expensive to build and maintain, owners are looking for ways to use them more often without damaging the playing surface.
The Bernabéu has shown that football stadiums no longer have to choose between sport and entertainment. Thanks to modern engineering, they can successfully do both.
Most visitors simply enjoy the match or the concert without thinking about what lies beneath their feet.
