Many animals are in danger because of hunting, pollution, habitat loss and climate change.
Extinction can seem impossible to stop. When animal numbers begin to fall, hunting, habitat loss, pollution and climate change can push a species closer to disappearing. However, some animals have recovered after reaching very low numbers. These examples show that wildlife can rebound when people remove the main threats and continue protecting it for many years.
One of the best examples is the Arabian oryx. This antelope once lived across the Arabian Peninsula, but modern vehicles and weapons made hunting much easier. By 1972, it had disappeared from the wild.
Fortunately, some animals had already been placed in breeding programmes. Their descendants were later released into protected areas in countries including Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
This carefully planned reintroduction, together with hunting bans and protected reserves, helped the species recover. It is still vulnerable, but it is no longer extinct in the wild.
Humpback whales also experienced a major recovery. Commercial whaling killed large numbers of them for their oil and meat. International restrictions on whaling allowed many populations to grow again.
However, humpback whales still face dangers such as ship collisions, fishing ropes, ocean noise and changing food supplies. Their recovery shows that stopping hunting is not enough. Healthy oceans and responsible stewardship are also necessary.
The bald eagle is another successful example. In the United States, its decline was caused by shooting, habitat destruction and the pesticide DDT. The chemical made eggshells too weak, so many chicks did not survive.
After DDT was restricted and nesting areas were protected, the bald eagle population began to rebound. It was removed from the American endangered-species list in 2007, although it remains legally protected.
The giant panda has also benefited from habitat conservation. Roads, farms and towns had divided its bamboo forests into smaller areas. China created nature reserves, restored forests and connected some isolated habitats.
As a result, panda numbers increased, and the species moved from Endangered to Vulnerable. However, its future remains precarious because many populations are still separated and climate change may reduce bamboo growth.
The black-footed ferret has had a more difficult recovery. This North American animal depends on prairie dogs for food and shelter. When prairie-dog numbers fell, the ferret almost disappeared.
A small population was discovered in Wyoming in 1981. Conservationists moved the remaining animals into captivity and began breeding them. Ferrets were later released into protected prairie-dog habitats.
However, nearly all living black-footed ferrets descend from only seven animals. Their low genetic diversity makes them more vulnerable to disease. Scientists are now using stored genetic material and cloning to improve the population’s chances.
Several animals are still extremely close to extinction. The vaquita, a small porpoise found only in Mexico, is one of the rarest marine mammals in the world.
Vaquitas become trapped in fishing nets, especially illegal nets used to catch totoaba fish. Conservationists remove nets, patrol protected areas and develop safer fishing equipment. However, the threat has not been completely removed.
The vaquita may still have enough resilience to recover, but only if dangerous nets disappear from its habitat quickly.
The North Atlantic right whale is also at risk. Fewer than four hundred are believed to remain. Many are injured or killed by ships and fishing ropes.
Efforts to protect them include ship-speed limits, whale-detection systems, rescue teams and fishing equipment that uses less permanent rope. These methods can help, but they depend on strong laws and cooperation from shipping and fishing industries.
New Zealand’s kākāpō requires even more support. This large, flightless parrot was badly affected by introduced predators such as cats, rats and stoats.
The remaining birds now live in protected areas, mainly on predator-free islands. Each bird is monitored, and conservationists manage breeding, protect chicks and provide medical care.
The Amur leopard also remains in a precarious position. Protected areas, anti-poaching patrols and wildlife cameras have helped its population increase. However, it still needs connected habitats, enough prey and cooperation between Russia and China.
These recoveries share several important features. Conservationists identified the main threat, protected habitat, introduced strong laws and monitored populations carefully. Local communities also played an important role.
Wildlife protection is more successful when local people receive employment, compensation or a voice in decisions. Farmers and fishing communities are more likely to support conservation when they are not expected to carry all the costs.
Success can also create false confidence. When a species moves from Endangered to Vulnerable, people may believe it is completely safe. In reality, recovery can quickly be reversed if protection ends.
Climate change is creating new dangers by changing temperatures, rainfall, forests and oceans. A protected area cannot save a species if its food or water disappears.
Animals that have returned from the brink provide real hope. Their recovery was not a miracle. It resulted from laws, breeding programmes, habitat restoration, scientific research and long-term cooperation.
Nature has remarkable resilience, but it has limits. Protecting a species before only a few animals remain is far easier than attempting to save it at the final moment.
